Sash windows are a type of window design that consists of one or more movable panels, or “sashes,” that hold the glass. These sashes can slide vertically or horizontally within the frame. Sash windows are often associated with traditional architecture, especially in Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian homes, though they can be found in modern buildings as well.

They’re usually made of timber but can also be made from materials like uPVC or aluminum. The main feature of sash windows is their ability to open by sliding, allowing for good ventilation and an aesthetic charm.

Install the Sash Window

  • Position the Sashes: Carefully lift the sashes into place within the frame. If it’s a double-hung design, the upper and lower sashes should be aligned and slide smoothly within the tracks.
  • Secure the Sashes: Attach the necessary hardware, such as sash pulleys, cords, and weights. These are crucial for the window to function properly. The cords will need to be connected to the window sashes and the weights to allow for smooth vertical movement.
